Test pits and evaluation trenches

What’s happening?

The 16th June sees the Trent & Peak archaeology team and Toton Unearthed volunteers break the surface for the first time in an exciting stage of the project, Phase 2: Test pits and evaluation trenches. There will be some sample boreholes put in too!

When does it start?

For a three-week period, 16th June to 4th July.

Where are they being put in?

Areas of archaeological interest have been carefully chosen by Trent & Peak, based on the findings in the official Field Survey Report written for the Survey conducted from April 22nd to May 2nd.

Here’s a illustration of where the evaluation trenches for Toton Manor will be put in  w/c 16th June. The Mill site’s full excavation commences on Monday 18th August,

How can I keep up to date?

We’ll keep you up to date on current events and finds with a new Test Pit and Trenches blog on this site, a “highlights” photo gallery of the dig itself, plus photos of any finds uncovered during the test pits phase.
